The Athlone ¾ Marathon was on Sunday 4th October. The race in its 5th year started in the lovely village of Glasson just outside Athlone. The route a fantastic running experience with its beautiful scenic views but also challenging and many run this race in preperation for DCM at the end of the month. The course takes in magnificent lakeside views around Lough Ree on quite country roads passing local historical sites. Just over 800 athletes took part the challenge of running the 31.646km or 19.664 miles!
Elise Too of Walters Athletics won the race in 1.40.23 with a massive gap of 20 mins before the second runner arrived. Brian Furey, Rathfarnham WSAF was jus over the 2 hour mark clocking 2.00.35 with Finn Valleys, Adam Speer taking 3rd place only minutes behind in 2.03.04. Mark Mitchell from Athenry AC finished in 38th place in 2.19.59 PB, Kieran Guiry 2.25.45 PB, Colin Duane 2.26.04 PB, Martin O Hara 2.27.50 PB, Paul Daly first time running this distance finished in 2.46.46 PB and Ollie Kyne 3.54.56 PB
Pauline Curley, Tullamore Harriers won the ladies race finishing 8th overall in 2.05.43.. In second place and finishing 23rd overall was Tara Kennedy from the Defence Forces clocking 2.15.55 and following in her shadow Sandra Lynch from Kilcoole AC took 3rd place and 25th overall in 2.16.08. From Athenry AC Marguerite Wilkinson 2.56.57, Caroline Freeney 3.24.33, Liz Broderick 3.28.05, Marie Montgomery 3.31.05, Assumpta King 3.46.31 and Mary Connaughton 3.47.36.
