A small and very much belated race report on the recent Tuam 8KM!

A fantastic event and one that Athenry AC has always been proud
to support in every way possible over its recent history. At
least 35 from the club ran there this time round, including
Valerie Glavin who ran to Tuam from Athenry and then back to
Athenry afterwards. Yes, she ran in the race itself, albeit not
*that* fast, obviously! Her feat put Mick Rice's and Peter Delmer's
relative jaunts over to the same race in previous years firmly in
the hal'penny place. We've all heard tell of stories of auld
fellas cycling to and from matches in the old days; well the
story of Val running to and from Tuam are 100% cast-iron true. I
have the photos to prove it and there are a handful of people
from the club who ran with her to and from the venue, arriving
back in Athenry well after sun set on Sunday evening!!!!!
The less said about my own race, the better other than that I
finished, but had to hide away for a few minutes afterwards to
avoid the gaze of GCH's Bernie Kelly as I only scraped in just in
front of her, after she leaving me in her wake during a hectic
first KM! The woman is learning not to go out too quickly but
isn't quite there yet :-).
The roadworks in the town were made very light for the runners by
good stewarding etc. The weather was also thankfully mild
considering some of the conditions seen around this county over
the previous month.
The refreshments and prize-giving were the same as always, with a
few envelopes making their way back to Athenry AC. Martin Keane
was first M65 while the women's team were second home.
