The Annaghdown Summer Solstice 10K took place on Saturday June 21st. The day started off wet, and then got wetter! Despite this, over 150 brave souls from all over the country, and some as far afield as Scotland and Sydney made it to the starting line. The race only had to be delayed by a mere 5 minutes and once the worse of the rain stopped, they were off. The weather actually cooperated and it was dry for the duration of the run and at the finish. In fact it was so nice it convinced some folks to take a dip in the lake to cool off.
First home was Mark Davis running in the colours of Craughwell AC in a time of 33.50. Mark improved over a minute on his time in last year’s race, which is even more impressive considering that he wasn’t seriously challenged, winning by close to 2 minutes.
The fight for second place came down to the wire with a mere 5 seconds separating Brian Bruton from Bohermore, a newcomer to the race, and another Craughwell AC athlete, Johnny Lane, showing great improvement on his 11th place finish in last year’s race.
In the senior ladies race, first place honours went to Ann Carter from Athenry AC. Ann was followed home by last year’s winner and club mate, Jane-Ann Healy. In third place was Gael Culleton from Dublin.
Veteran men prizes went to Dan O Rourke from Tuam AC in the O/40’s, Martin McEvilly from GCH in the O/50’s and Brian Geraghty also from GCH in the O/60’s.

Brian Geraghty and Paul Fallon
In the veteran women’s category’s, the winners were Noreen McNamara from Mayo AC in the O/35’s and Marie Treasa Beatty from Athenry AC in the O/45’s.
In the kid’s fun run, there was a very encouraging turnout of 67. It was a great sight to see them all take off like they were been chased by a pack of wild dogs! When they got to the finish at the pier, they were rewarded for their efforts with fruit, water and a well deserved medal.
A big thank you goes out to all the sponsors of this event and to the many stewards and volunteers who gave up their day to make the day the success it was. Like last year, the many refreshments available at the prize giving ceremony were very welcome, especially considering the day that was in it.
Bring on the sunshine in ’09!
