Saturday morning, I was preparing my bag for work and was thinking to go for a short run before the race on Sunday in Ballina. I was ready to start my day when Alan called me asking if I waiting for him in Tuam. I was surprised and asked him why. When he told me that the race was on Saturday and not on Sunday, I nearly had a heart attack and started to panic at home. I called him 10min later and cancelled all my appointments for the busiest day of the week. I ran in the car with baby Alicia and Aisling at 11h30. I arrived in ballina at 1h15 pm, and met the team for a short warm-up.

A short while ago I finished reading Paul Reese's fine book, "Ten Million Steps: The Incredible Journey of Paul Reese, Who Ran Across America--A Marathon a Day for 124 Days--At Age 73", (High Country Books, ISBN: 1567960146). This hugely impressive book details one of the most impressive ultrarunning feats I've seen described. Unfortunately Paul passed away in 2004 but not before he had some other adventure and published two more books which I can't wait to read. In 1997 he published "Go East Old Man: Adventures of a Runner in His 70s Traveling 22 Western States", edited by Joe Henderson, (Keokee Company Publishing, Inc., ISBN: 1879628155). GCH Running star Gary Thornton produced another fantastic performance whilst rereresenting Ireland in the Belfast International UK Cross Challenge at Stormont on Saturday last. Competing in the senior men's race Gary finished hot on the heels of Clare's Seamus Power in an impressive 11th place. Gary's running has improved out of all recognition this year and he's running well in elite company.

The Galway Board of the AAI organised a well attended and successful County Indoor Championships last Saturday the 6th of January. Events ranged accross the age groups from U12 to senior athletes. Although full results are not to hand yet a few events are noteworthy.
In the 3,000m Loughrea's Jason Broderick once again stamped his authority on the field coming home in front of Craughwel's Mark Davis and Athenry's young star Seamie Gilhooley. Rumour has it that Mark set off at a blistering pace from the gun but was forced to a premature halt by a lace that had become untied.
The Connaught Masters, Junior & Senior cross-country championship, which had been scheduled for the 8th January in Ballina, has been moved to 21st January at the same venue.
The indoor action next weekend, for Galway based athletes both young and old, will be at the indoor arena in Nenagh, Co.Tipperary. The championship kicks off with a senior race over 3,000m at 11:00am on Saturday the 7th January.
