Despite missing many regulars, Athenry's ladies placed first in the team prize at the 25th annual Claregalway 10k (formally known as "Clare River Harriers Athletic Club 25th Annual Road Race"). The team comprised Lorna Freeman, Fiona Lane, and Liz Broderick and none have ever won a prize of any description before this one. Well done on that, ladies.

Our men - Ray Somers, David Noone, Enda Munnelly, Adrian Fitzmaurice - also did well to place second behind a strong Galway City Harriers. Ray continued his good form by coming 9th overall in 37:15.

This is a tough 10k course, being two  circuits of the 5k route, with mostly hilly terrain. The evening was fine though muggy, and the finish line did seem to witness slightly more sprawled, breathless bodies than most road races around. There are a tremendous numbers of races now, and numbers running were slightly down compared to five or so years ago at this well-organized event which is also the county Galway 10k championship. We wish them a happy 25 years and look forward to running it for another 25 years at least.

Philip Magnier registered a second in the over 55 individual category. Full results are at: http://www.redtagtiming.com/results/Claregalway10km_2012.pdf
