Athenry athlete, Ruthann Sheahan, did brilliantly to finish 38th overall out of 248 finishers when running for Ireland at the 2012 IAU 24H WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS in Katowice, Poland on the weekend of 8-9 September. Ruthann finished 7th among the women and was only just beaten by Irishman John O'Regan.

We understand that her time is an (as yet unratified) Irish women's road record for a 24-hour race at 229.346 kilometers covered for the duration of the race. This converts to 142.5 miles. We also understand that Valerie Glavin will retain her indoor record for the 24-hour ultra marathon, set in 2011. So raise a glass or two in celebration to  both girls.

The European 24H Championships were run concurrently and Ruthann finished 5th.

Husband George Livanos, pictured below, has been very supportive to Ruthann over the years and accompanied her on the trip. Supplying an athlete with food and drink is a hugely important part of the effort and George did trojan work in that respect.

...let alone running!

Fair play to you, Ruthann!

P.S. I hear Val is already in training ;-).
