Another Tuesday night in Galway in early summer and another fantastic night's running. Clare River Harriers made their debut in the series last night as race organisers and put on a great race. The weather just about held up and there was another fantastic turn-out with in excess of 260 runners and walkers on the line at 08:00pm. The host club had provided a challenging course with more than one climb included into the 3.1 miles and a stiff breeze added a little to the difficulty of the task. The usual gaggle of lightweight speed-machines jostled for position when it became clear that Andy Talbot was about to get the race underway. Behind the thoroughbreds the normal mortals braced themselves for what was on the way. It's amazing just how much a three mile run can hurt if you're going fast enough. In just a few seconds the smiling hoards were charging into the deep dark Galway countryside.

All our thanks and congratulations go to Andy Talbot and his team in Clare River Harriers for providing such a fantastic race and for being such hospitable race hosts on the evening. They set a very high standard for everyone else to live up to.

As is usual on these race evenings, you could have generated enough electricity to light up a medium sized Irish town from the endless supply of positive vibes both before and after the race. Hands were shook, backs were slapped, injuries compared and then there was a little running or walking to do. Tuesday night running seems to suit so many people and the sheer enjoyment for many people taking part was clear to see in the smiling, laughing and banter around the car park in Claregalway.

What on Earth are we going to do in a few weeks time when this series winds up. Two more left to go - Loughrea next week and then Galway. It's like a good book that you don't want to finish.

Don't hang up those trainers just yet!

It was a shame about the traffic jam on the outskirts of Claregalway last night. Several runners had to abandon their cars and run to the start. We got there just in time to see the runners heading off into the distance! Still we made it round the course and that exclusive T shirt is in sight! Well done to all the organisers from the various clubs on a great 5k series. A special congrats to Ray on his superb achievement! It was great to see him there last night to cheer on the rest of us!!

I thought it was such a pity that the start of the race could not have been delayed for 5 minutes to allow all of the competitors who were caught up in the traffic jam, due to roadworks to make their way to the start. These werer exceptional circustances out of the hands of the competitors. It was a bit disheartening having abandoned the car about two km away, racing up the road to the start and the runners fading into the distance. I think i'll be leaving an extra half an hour early next week incase of any unforseen roadworks etc....

Sorry for missing the start on Tuesday evening.

The series has always prided itself on starting all the legs to date exactly on time.

If I am correct, Andrew Talbot set us off within 30 seconds of 8:00 PM!

bit disappointed by the race in Claregalway, the cars were all over the route which made running rather uncomfortable - no need to enter a race if you're going to be hasstled off the road by cars. Also, having to run through the runners who had finished and to slalom around cars to reach the finish line was far from enjoyable. Not to mention the finish sign was taken away before the last runners arrived - it felt like it was not a race for the common people but rather geared towards for the elite runners.

I can understand some of what you're saying, but it's impossible to hold race organisers responsible for the actions of every motorist. Even in the biggest, best resourced, most stewarded races there can be problems when angry or impatient motorists do stupid things. The point about runners warming down on the race route is valid and this has been a problem for other races too. Certainly the people who finish towards the front of the field should be more thoughtful of their fellow runners who are still completing the course. In fairness though to the organisers it's nearly impossible to enforce good etiquette on hundreds of runners and collect a race result at the same time. Perhaps we should remind our runners and walkers of what's expected before the last two races so that we can all try to get the best out of the series for this year.

This series is most definitely not meant to be geared towards the people who normally finish at the front of the field and we should make sure we protect that spirit.

We live and learn. Thanks for the feedback.

Claregalway 5k was not all bad. I was talking to some of the girls after the run and they did PB there. I think it was well run and would like to say thank you to Clare River Harriers for a good evening. A place to change toilets need I say more weather was good 2. See you all next week. Hard to please 261 people!
